Our Clerkenwell Adventure
April 29th & 30th took us to London! Our Director – Adam, our brand new Office Interiors Manager – Tony and our ‘kind of new’ Design Manager – Nicole, enjoyed mooching around London’s trendy Clerkenwell meeting some of our fantastic suppliers and checking out the latest trends in Office Interiors. It would be understandable if you were under the illusion that Offices are dull, drab and boring as a rule but we’re pleased to inform you that this is far from the case – the area of Clerkenwell is bursting with unusually shaped, bright, punchy colours and is home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else. Combine this with the abundance of innovative, futuristic, award winning designs makes Clerkenwell one of the most important design hubs in the world. We had a whale of a day!
We won’t lie, the journey from the Midlands to London didn’t come without its moments of stress (don’t tell him we said it – rememeber, he is our BOSS!) but these moments were mainly down to Adam and his questionable timekeeping. We’re presuming his watch must require new batteries as it was surely a few minutes (or maybe half an hour!) behind.
Running behind schedule from the off, we commenced a rather brisk walk in the unexpected Spring sun and navigated ourselves to Connections Seating on Great Sutton Street where, beyond the attractive looking ice cold Peroni Beers we could just about make out the bubbly, smiley Debbie Smallman alongside the welcoming and friendly Kristen, manager of the Connections showroom…ahh relax! After a quick catch up, Debbie who manages our account, proudly took us on a guided tour around their brand new showroom – and what a showroom it is! With its exposed brick and white metal staircase it is very New York ‘loft-ish’ and we love it! The area perfectly showcases some of our favourite Connections products including a fantastic collaboration of ‘Hive’ (www.connection.uk.com/Products/Hive) complete with motion sensitive ceiling spot lights and a tasteful addition of a round ended walnut table in the centre. You’ll soon learn we are huge fans of break-out furniture and Hive is certainly a product not to be overlooked.
We lost Adam on a couple of occasions whilst he took phonecalls inside ‘Cubbi’ (www.connection.uk.com/Products/Cubbi) a fantastic single work station found in the soft seating range which absorbs any exterior accoustics making it a silent, hectic-free comfortable work station. Whilst we’re on the subject of soft-seating, we must introduce you to ‘Tryst’ (www.connection.uk.com/Products/Tryst-U-Shape) a favourite of Adam’s, which includes a modular mix of versatile high back and low back sofas and seating booths with integrated work surfaces. As with all Connections products, these can be covered in a range of fantastically aesthetically pleasing fabrics, including the stylish ‘Blazer’ (by Camira) as shown above.
At this point, it is worth mentioning Debbie’s plans for a ‘Pop-Up’ Connections Showroom on Edmund Street in Birmingham where she will occupy multiple floors of an old office block in order to exhibit some of the Connections range. A fantastic opportunity to see the designs in-situ without travelling to London. We can’t wait for this local outpost and know Debbie will always welcome visitors with open arms. Following another hour of ‘catching up’, strictly on all things office furniture of course, Debbie directed us to the nearest watering hole whilst Kirsten confidently told us of her impressive plans for an evening of yoga. Inevitably, Kirsten soon had a pint of Stella in her hand and the yoga session was unceremoniously cancelled quicker than you can say ‘One more?’
So, having been looked after far too well by Debbie and Kristen on the Wednesday, we had a busy day planned for Thursday and by the time we finished over-indulging at breakfast we set off on our way… Our first stop for the day was The Gallery, just a few doors up from Connections. The Gallery is a “groundbreaking collaboration in the heart of Clerkenwell” showcasing key elements to create a complete office interior and a forum for innovative design and fresh thinking. There is so much to be excited about here that we don’t even know where to begin!
Mesh (www.tangentfurniture.co.uk/products/reception), a reception desk made by Tangent was the first desk to greet us and it certainly doesn’t lack in ‘Wow’ factor. A modular desk made from the unusual material ‘krion’ – the latest brain child of Porcelanosa – sits monolithically yet elegantly and we were all instantly drawn to it. This product looks and feels great – we can’t big it up enough! Next to blow our minds is a product we’ve had our eye on for a while, ‘Air Charge’. If your office is anything like ours and there is only one iPhone charger to go around… This has got to be the most useful gadget created since….well, the phone charger!!! Air Charge simply charges your device without the need to plug it in via a cable…..weird…but true!! We can’t wait to start installing them within our desks. In fact, you can add Air Charge into any one of our desks – just ask!
